The hammering goes on, but things are really taking shape. Grab a hardhat and some work boots — we’re doing another check-in at our new HQ.
When you’re building out a new work space, you can get weirdly excited about some seemingly mundane things. Who knew drywall and spackling could be so enthralling? Yep, we’re as giddy as a kid with a big bucket of Lego.
Last month we gave you the first preview of our new space. Since then, things have moved beyond installing ventilation systems and steel beams. We’re now up to our eyeballs in fun new things like wood panels, paint chips, and carpet swatches. As you can see below, construction is churning full steam ahead.
Just look at those custom-built roofs covering our meeting spaces. The faceted, prismatic shapes are one of the most exciting design aspects found in our new HQ.
The central structure will house our main boardroom as well as an office for Rob, STAT’s founder and CEO. At the south end of the office, you’ll find four rooms: three breakout rooms and an office for Anish, our technical director. We’ll definitely be making good use of the space.
That’s a big part of what spurred us to move. Right now, we’re feeling a bit crammed. Imagine a gang of 24 (and growing) having to share one meeting room and a small kitchen. It’s tight and we’re just short of having conference calls in the bathroom (no, we’ll never actually do that).
We’re amped!
Our current office space has served us well, but comes with a few drawbacks. First off, it’s old. The building opened its doors in 1912 — the same year the Titanic sank. That means having to contend with a few annoyances. For example, operating the microwave and coffee machine at the same time results in a blown fuse. Hungry and un-caffeinated colleagues? It’s like something out of The Walking Dead.
That will soon be a thing of the past. Not only will our kitchen be fully equipped with new microwaves, fridges, and dishwashers, it will have more than enough power to go around. Oh yes, and beer and wine taps. Everyone’s happy.
Of course, the new office is going to allow us to do more than heat up minestrone and make cappuccinos at the same time. Teams will be able to huddle and hash out ideas without having to talk over other teams (it can get a bit noisy in our current space). We’ll be able to host all sorts of events in our mezzanine. And we won’t have to share bathrooms with strangers from down the hall. It’s going to be such bliss!
Much of the heavy construction is now wrapping up, so the next few weeks will be about painting, flooring, and installing furniture and artwork. We’re in the home stretch. Come back again soon for another update. In the meantime, cruise on over to our Facebook album for more pics.
